A 5-paragraph essay consists of an introductory paragraph, threebody paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. This writingtechnique may be used for many types of essays and is especiallyefficient for argumentative and persuasive essays. Theintroductory paragraph should contain the thesis statement thatgrabs the reader's attention and represents the primary ideadeveloped in the essay. The introductory paragraph should befinalized by a transitional sentence that softly leads thereader towards a body paragraph.
The first body paragraph should start with a transitionalsentence that connects it with the introductory paragraph. It isimportant to organize the first body paragraph around thestrongest argument, fact or point identified during thepreparatory stage. The writer should clearly identify thesubject of the entire paragraph in the first or second sentence,demonstrating the direct relation of an idea with the previouslystated thesis. The paragraph should be finalized with aconnecting sentence that prepares the writer to the transitionto the second body paragraph.
The second body paragraph should expose the second strongestargument, fact or point. The paragraph should start with asentence that connects the paragraph with the transitionalsentence of the first body paragraph. The writer should clearlyidentify the subject of the entire paragraph in the first orsecond sentence, demonstrating the direct relation of an ideawith the previously stated thesis. The paragraph should befinalized with a connecting sentence that prepares the writer tothe transition to the third body paragraph.
The third body paragraph should identify the weakest argument,fact or point. The paragraph should start with a sentence thatconnects the paragraph with the transitional sentence of thesecond body paragraph. The writer should clearly identify thesubject of the entire paragraph in the first or second sentence,demonstrating the direct relation of an idea with the previouslystated thesis. The paragraph should be finalized with aconcluding sentence that prepares the writer to the transitionto the concluding paragraph.
The summary, or concluding paragraph, should restate the thesisand three supporting arguments stated in the body paragraphs.The writer should demonstrate a clear, persuasive andprofessional style as this is the last chance to convince thereader of the relevancy of the stated information. Theconcluding paragraph should also demonstrate the styleresemblance to the introductory paragraph and inform the readerabout the finalization of the discussion.
